Job Title: Nursing Assistant Department: Patient Care Services - 5 MEDICAL

Summary: (Summarize primary purpose of job function)
Assists patients with activities of daily living, provides basic patient care, and assists in the maintenance of a safe and clean environment under the supervision of licensed nursing staff. All employees of Southeast Georgia Health System will promote a culture of safety, follow established policies, adhere to all state and federal regulatory requirements, JCAHO requirements, and national patient safety standards.
Reports To: Licensed nursing staff
Titles Supervised: N/A

Essential Responsibilities:
1. Contributes to patient data base by collecting and documenting assessment information such as height, weight, allergies, vital signs, and intake and output measurements.  Prepares patient rooms (beds and equipment) for receiving patient admissions, returning surgical patients, transfers, or discharges.  Assists in and accompanies patients in the admission, transfer, and discharge procedures.  Always correctly identifies patient by name for any direct care procedures and treatments or diet; checks patient’s name band for correct identification:  assures proper name and that band is secured on patient’s wrist.
2. Provides general patient care such as morning care, which may include bed bath, oral hygiene, combing hair, dressing patient, evening care, back rubs, changing bed linen, cleaning overbed table and bedside stand, straightening room, and other general care as necessary throughout the shift.  Provides for patient privacy, at all times; closes room door and cubicle curtains for all procedures.
3. Prepares patient for meals, and assist with meals or feed patients.  Distributes drinking water, ice, and other nourishments to patients as ordered.
4. Collects and transports specimens as ordered or requested.
5. Reports any changes observed in condition or behavior of patients in a timely manner.
6. Responds promptly to patient needs and call lights (whether that of assigned patient or not), and checks on patients regularly between tasks.
7. Provides for patient safety through preventative measures (bed controls, nurse/patient communication system, siderails, and patient education).
Minimum Qualifications:
 Education High School graduate or equivalent
 Experience Certification as a Nursing Assistant.
 Licensure None required
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Positive interpersonal communication skills.  Demonstrates a cooperative attitude by being tactful and sensitive while using sound judgment when relating to others.  Must demonstrate proficiency in taking and recording V/S and obtaining blood glucose values.  Current American Heart Association BCLS Certification is required .
